More Than a Shed: How a Veneto Club Group is Revolutionising Men’s Health

In a quiet corner of the Veneto Club (La Baracca or The Sports Bar), something powerful happens on the first Tuesday of the month. There’s no sound of saws or hammers, no scent of fresh wood shavings. Instead, you’ll find the hum of conversation, the shared comfort of a light meal, and the occasional roar of laughter. This is The Men’s Shed @ Veneto Club, and its motto, “We Turn Minds, Not Wood,” signals a vital mission: building stronger, healthier men through connection and conversation.

For nearly five years, this initiative has filled a critical gap in the Manningham area and beyond, creating a safe, welcoming haven for men of all ages and walks of life. It was born from a simple but profound need—a dedicated place where men could step away from the pressures of daily life, meet others, and talk openly, reinforcing the core belief that prevention is always better than a cure.

A Night of Connection and Conversation

The Shed’s success is undeniable. With a vibrant online community of over 600 members, its monthly gatherings from March to October (and the first Wednesday of November) have become a cornerstone of the local social calendar, with events attracting as many as 250 men.

But what exactly happens at a meeting? It’s a carefully crafted recipe for wellbeing. Men gather, share a light bite to eat, and listen to a diverse lineup of engaging keynote speakers. The roster is intentionally varied, featuring everything from raw, powerful stories shared by men who have lived with depression and anxiety, to practical advice from medical professionals. The stage has also been graced by sports stars sharing lessons in resilience and the odd comedian reminding everyone of the healing power of laughter. This blend of education, empathy, and entertainment provides a crucial "time out" and equips men with new perspectives and tools for their mental health.

Community Recognition and a Sustainable Future

The impact of this work has not gone unnoticed. In a proud moment for its dedicated team of seven volunteers, The Men’s Shed @ Veneto Club was honoured by the Manningham City Council in September 2025 with the Award for Community Wealth and Wellbeing. This prestigious accolade formally recognised the group's significant and positive contribution to the social fabric of the local community.

Join the Movement

The Men’s Shed @ Veneto Club is more than just a monthly meeting—it’s a lifeline, a community, and a proactive force for men’s mental health. It’s a place where it’s okay not to be okay, and where a simple conversation can be the first step toward a healthier mind.
